Melbourne Cup Day 2015

It’s that time of the year when we get to bring out our pretty floral dresses, funky fascinators and dress up for the fabulous and fun horse races.

I’ve never been much of a gambling person, so for me the races isn’t really about the race itself. Whilst I do still put a little bit of money on a race or two, I am more there because it is fun to dress up in a classy and carefully matched outfit.

I had planned on going Melbourne this year to attend the famous “race that stops the nation” but unfortunately I had to stay in Canberra. So instead I organised a Race Day Luncheon at my work. I wore to work what I intended to wear the real race, and I had plenty of compliments about my outfit that day.

Melbourne Cup is all about bright colours, which is why I chose to wear a combination of bright red and royal blue. The background of white on the dress softens the bright colours and makes it more work appropriate – this dress is actually in my regular rotation for work clothes!

Here’s some pics of my race day outfit… Just wish I actually got to attend the Melbourne Cup races this year!

Denim, Pink and Sand

I love going to the beach. The relaxing sound of the waves, the smell of salt in the air, the sand between my toes… even when the temperature is cold, I will still head down to the beach. It makes me feel relaxed and happy.

During my recent trip back to hometown to see my parents, we went for a quick visit to the beach after brunch. It was so nice. My sister and I ran around the beach taking photos whilst my parents sat and relaxed on the sand. It was a really nice afternoon.

I wore a simple but cute and casual outfit this day. I am so in love with my pink dress from Forever New – it fits so nicely and can be dressed up or down. I styled it with my wardrobe staple – my denim/chambray shirt. I lived in this shirt when I travelled around Europe, and I've continued to live in it since I got back! I finished off the look with a printed headband and my cat eye sunglasses. I was wearing some cute pastel kitten heels to brunch, but took them off so I could run around in the sand 🙂

Forest Fairy Princess

The few hours before sunset are called “The Golden Hours” by photographers. It's when the sun is getting ready to set and the light is perfectly golden. It's a great time to shoot photos because the sun isn't harsh on the skin, eyes or background. There are no stark shadows – instead soft shadows make photos look blissful and romantic.

As day light savings time comes to an end in Australia, I knew that I would not have many more chances of being able to capture beautiful photos at this time in my summer clothes. So I ventured out to the park next to my house and had some pretty photos taken under the trees. The trees are starting to lose some of my their leaves and I knew that this would be a perfect setting to wear my new maxi dress in.

I felt like a fairy princess in my flower crown, wandering around the trees. As the the chiffon fabric blew in the cool autumn breeze, I knew I had chosen the perfect time to shoot some photos of this outfit…

The beauty of this dress is that it can be styled to represented a pretty, fairy princess, but then it can be transformed into a glamorous outfit for a formal event:

Budget Style: Cute Summer Outfit for under $100
It’s been a while since I’ve posted an outfit post. Well, it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything regularly.

Life has been busy. I’m half way through writing posts or editing photos for posts and then a new idea comes to mind and I start doing that one as well. Then it goes with the other half finish posts because another new post is started. Then I’m not motivated to properly finish the posts.

It’s like a cycle I can’t get out of.

I’m going to try and regain some structure to my blog posts. I also need a little bit of extra motivation to finish those posts. That means I will have to stop starting posts and never finishing them.

In the meantime, I would like to share some quick snaps taken before I attended a charity trivia night.

It was still summer and still warm only a month ago. And still light at 7pm. Now that it’s getting darker sooner and it’s definitely colder outside…

I found this cute floral midi skirt at Valleygirl. Ok I didn’t actually find it – I saw someone showing her purchases to her friend in the mall and she showed this gorgeous floral midi skirt. I ijust had to ask her where she got it from. Then she told me it was from Valleygirl and it was on $29.99. I knew I had to race there and get one for myself!

I teamed it with a basic crop from Supre. I love the basics from Supre because they will go with everything and they often come in a variety of different colours and patterns too.

My Forever New clutch is currently a favourite. It’s big enough to fit the essentials and a few other bits and pieces too. It goes with so many different outfits and colours, so it’s becoming a staple in my wardrobe.

Finally, my flats are a cheapie pair I found at Big W. I buy most of my shoes from places like Big W, Kmart and Target because, let’s face it, not all of us have a huge budget for designer shoes. Getting flats like this are a great idea because they generally last the season and by next season I’ll want a new pair or style anyway, so this allows me to change up my wardrobe at a fraction of the cost.

Vintage Style Challenge: Rose. Rabbit. Lie

IMG_1488 (1)

For my 21st birthday I decided to have a Roaring 20s themed Speakeasy party. It involved months of research and planning but it ended up being a fantastic and fun party. When I was researching the 1920s, I obviously started researching fashion and what the “flappers” wore back then. I fell in love with this style of clothing!

Since then, the beautiful and extravagant Great Gatsby movie has come out, with many designers and fashion chains taking inspiration from this movie. I’ve been to a few Gatsby themed parties since then and I love dressing up for these occasions!

Roaring 20s and great Gatsby outfit inspiration

So I was definitely excited when I knew I was one of a few select blogs taking part in a Vintage Style Challenge. This challenge involves creating a Roaring 20s look for a Rose. Rabbit. Lie party in the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas Resort.

Challenge gladly accepted!

Rose. Rabbit. Lie. has a “casual elegant” dress code, and after checking out their Instagram account, I can see that it has a speakeasy feel to it with the shabby chic decor. I think it would be easy and fun to create a look for attending a party here.

After discovering I’ve decided I need to book a trip to Las Vegas and I will definitely check out this funky yet sophisticated Cosmopolitan Las Vegas Resort! I’ve been daydreaming away thinking about how nice it would be to stay in a Terrace One Bedroom at the Cosmopolitan Hotel. It looks so fresh and glamourous.

I could imagine just strolling down The Strip to gaze at all the glitz and glamour, doing a tour of the Grand Canyon or ATV Hidden Valley tour during the day, then checking out shows like Cirque de Soleil and nightclubs like Voodoo Rooftop Nightclub. Oh and who could forget about the Casinos?? So many things I want to do….

In the meantime, I will imagine that I am getting ready to attend a party there and put together a gatsby worthy outfit… Here’s what I came up with:

Now I’m off to continue daydreaming about my future trip to Las Vegas…
