There’s many reasons I love living in Canberra. It’s like a big country town, but with everything you get in a city – from boutique shops to malls and outlets, quirky cafes to classy restaurants, events like Fashfest and Floriade, and so much more!
A lot of people from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane say that it’s a boring place to live, but that is far from the truth. One of the reasons I love Canberra is because there is such a variety of things to do on the weekend and week nights.
One of those things you can do is explore the natural beauty of the nations capital. People are often amazed at all the beautiful natural wonders they can find only a short distance from the heart of the city. A favourite place of mine is Gibraltar Falls.
It is about a 25 drive from Tuggeranong so it would be around 50 minute drive if you came straight from the city. You will get to go past Paddy’s River and eventually come onto Corin Road where you will find beautiful bush and rivers to explore within Namadgi National Park.
The height of the falls is approximately 50 m and after the fall cascades, it goes into the Gibraltar Creek which eventually connects to Paddy’s River.
Gibraltar Falls is relatively unknown to many non-locals, and I only found out about this from my partner. We sometimes go down this little spot for picnics or just to wander around the bush. Sometimes it’s just nice to go for a drive here and come down to the lookout and see how vast Canberra is.
You can also go swimming here and it’s a great spot to take a dip as there are never too many people. The waterfall is the one of a few Canberra waterfalls that you can swim at. However I would be careful about taking children here, especially if they are young. The swimming spot is at the top of the waterfall, not the bottom.
A bit further downstream the creek goes past a camping area with very basic amenities. I am not sure if I would camps here, particularly as snakes and spiders are out and about during the Summer months.
Here’s some pictures of our recent visit to Gibraltor falls.
Have you been to Gibraltar Falls in Canberra? Do you know of a place similar to Gibraltar Falls that I should visit? Let me know in the comments section!
