The Perfect Entertainment Platter

When you have guests over, it’s always nice to great them with a delicious selection of food. It’s definitely a great way to get any party started: Whether it’s a BBQ, to have with wine or cocktails, for a dinner party, when hosting a Tupperware party or even just a night in with the girls.

They really are fun and easy and your guests will truly appreciate when you put in a little bit extra of effort to make it something they will enjoy.

This is how I approach organising a platter of food for entertaining guests.

What You’ll Need

  • Wooden plate or ceramic tray
  • Cheese knives
  • Small tongs
  • Small serving bowls
  • Napkins or small plastic plates
  • Toothpicks

Five components:

A platter works best when you have a combination of these five components: cheese, crackers, dip, meat and fruits/vegetables.

 

1. Cheese

Cheddar, Camembert, Brie, Gouda, cream cheese, Blue, Gorgonzola, vintage cheese, feta, goat cheese

2. Crackers

Black pepper water crackers, Jatz/Ritz, rice crackers, corn chips, sweet potato chips, bagel chips, mini toasts

3. Dip & Spreads

French onion, hummus, tatziki, avocado dip, tomato salsa, spicy capsicum dip, pesto dip, cream cheese and sweet chilli, fig paste, chutney

4. Meat

Sliced cabinnossi, shaved salami, prosciutto, ham, smoked salmon,

5. Fruits & Vegetables

Sticks of celery and carrot, olives, sundried tomato, roasted eggplant, artichokes, pickled onions or gherkins, strawberries, grapes, dried apricot, sliced apple, sliced pear,

Optional: Nuts

Almonds, peanuts, pistachios, walnuts

Size of Platter

For a small group of people, 1-2 cheeses should be picked, at least 2 different types of crackers, 1-2 dips, 1 meat option, 1 vegetable option.

For a medium sized group of 10 people, minimum 2 cheeses, 3 dips, 4 crackers, 2 meats and 2 vegetables

Large group 20+ people, you should have around 4-5 cheeses, 5 dips, 5 crackers, 3 meats and 4 fruits/vegetables

The more people, the more options there should be as there are more likes/dislikes, allegergies and intolerances. I try to make sure that there are dairy free, vegetarian, gluten free and nut free options. Any nut products should be kept away from other items to avoid contamination and potential allergic reactions.
